Epic Earbud Recovery | Earbud-Finder

I was recently doing some cleaning of the wood line along my property listening to podcasts as I was using my DeWalt, 20v hedge trimmer to make short work of it. The problem came when I went to slap a mosquito or sort of insect from buzzing around my right ear and in the process, I knocked the earbud from my ear into this roughly cut mess.

A messy area of vegetation featuring cut grass, small branches, and leaves, showing the aftermath of gardening or trimming activity.

I thought I saw exactly where it fell based on the movement of the leaves and such, but it seemed to have fallen into some sort of “nature” portal that displaced if from where I was certain it fell. The first thing I realized when trying to find a black earbud is that black is a terrible color for finding in the thick of the vegetation. The second thing I realized is that nature if loud. So many things make noises and there is nothing peaceful about noisy nature when you are earnestly looking for a fallen ear bud as the sun is beginning to set and insects are viewing you as a tasty treat. I tried to turn up the earbuds with various sounds, music and the like but I just couldn’t locate it. After several hours of frustration, I resorted to DuckDuck Go in a plea for help to find my fallen earbuds.

I found Earbud-finder.com

The interface for an earbud-finding tool, displaying options for volume, frequency, pulse frequency, and pulse strength, with instructions for use.

Since I had already placed one earbud far enough behind me to not confuse my already compromised hearing, my earbuds were still connected, I was hopeful that this would work. I also want to note that when earbud are not actually in your ear, they are not easy to hear at all.

I turned up the volume and hit play. To my surprise, I could hear this awful noise and I successfully found the earbud but it wasn’t anywhere near where I was searching at all. The earbud had fallen, somehow, three feet to the opposite side of where I was positioned. So, my portal theory was actually plausable…

Final Thoughts

I nearly lost one of my earbuds on this late Saturday evening, but thankfully, someone out there had already created a solution which means, I am not he only one in the world that has thwacked the side of their head, hurling an earbud into the Nether.

Sure, this solution only works if you act immediately, but at least there is a solution out there. Without this, I would be down an earbud and causing serious stress to my pernicious OCD I deal with on a regular basis.

  1. This sounds like a great idea. I could have done with this a month ago.

I listen to podcasts when going to sleep. Normally after many years of doing this I naturally sense when I’m starting to drift off to sleep and I can take the ear bud out (I only use one on the opposite side to my ear on the pillow). Every now and again however, I’m so tired my natural instincts don’t have time to warn me and I fall asleep with the ear bud still in. I recover it in the morning when I wake up. It’s normally on the floor nearby or in the bed somewhere.

4 weeks ago it vanished when I woke up. Nowhere to be found. I pulled the bedroom apart trying to find it and was really frustrated for weeks. I did finally find it. Of course it was somewhere I had already checked 20 times before. I can’t explain why it appeared there a month later.

This tool would have saved me weeks of frustration I’m sure of it. The ear bud is still on in the morning so I would have been able to pinpoint it quickly. I’ve installed the app ready for the next time one of my ear buds decide to go on a holiday to an alternate universe.
