This was a great episode of Linux Saloon. Lots of great discussion, fantastic participation and some touchy topics. The conversations stayed friendly even if we aren’t all in agreement on the various topics.

- i just recently upgraded my “server” hardware stack. i went from a 4th gen Haswell Xeon on Z97 with 32 gb DDR3 on Debian with docker over to a dell Optiplex 3080 micro with I5 10500T and 64gb of DDR4 running proxmox… I will say as much as I’m still learning proxmox it has saved me time already…. stuff actually freaking works so far and so far hasn’t broken on the software side… the Z97 was notorious for just random jank and messing itself…. legit the same software set that took I and my buddy forever on Debian with docker to get up and keep up, took 3 days on proxmox and i was able to do it mostly myself… i just finished setting up the last of what the Xeon had this morning
- I use NotebookLM a fair bit to assist with complex research and writing reports. It’s very good. Saves me time and it’s more accurate and detailed than I could be when reviewing large files.
- I’ve had it document APIs and system architecture. It is also surprisingly good at spitting out generic documents, like, “I need a base Division 27 document” or “Create an RFQ for internet service”
- I’ve had AI write scripts for me… I basically tell it what i want done take what it spits out test run it give the AI back any errors it spits out and just iterate until it works. very much the throw crud on a shingle and see what sticks kind of thing…
- Other: I have use ai once to write a gaming review for Destination Linux, mainly to troll DasGeek back for all those horrific games I had to review over the years. whilst it was amusing to do it was a one off.
- I often use AI to translate wordings or sayings from one language to another. This is something can’t really be translated word by word or with say google translate. I’ve also sometimes used AI to clear my thoughts on a subject and have used the text output of the “dialogue”.

Are rolling release distros the future? Or are rolling release distros less relevant with universal packages?

Adrian has put together a new text-based mode for the main gazelle-installer which we are starting to test. Sort of ncurses based. More news later, but it will offer a friendlier experience to those folks that run snapshots without a gui.
