Linux Saloon 191 | Application Managers

Tonight we discussed the many application managers or stores that work across multiple desktop environments and distributions. There was a lot of positive impressions from Bazaar as the conversation meandered around in many directions. This was a fun evening of nerdy tech conversation.

What have you been doing in tech or Linux?

When recording Linux Out Loud Bill told a story about data having weight. I went down the rabbit hole and wrote this as a result.

StrawPoll: If Android loses sideloading, will you switch to iOS/Apple on your next phone?

If Android loses sideloading, will you switch to iOS/Apple on your next phone?

In case Google does lock down Android as much as Apple has iOS in that sideloading no longer is viable. Will that change what phone you will buy next?

  • I already own an iPhone and an iMac running Linux and I’m not going back. Apple puts quality parts in there stuff and run good
  • Other: Doesn’t everyone use GrapheneOS ?
  • I chose that I would keep Android. Not enthused about losing side-loading, but I also haven’t side-loaded an app in several years.
  • Hmm that’s a rough one. For now? Not really I dislike iPhone but it does remove one of the features I like android for
  • i take option 3 say up a creak to them both and advocate for flip phones like its the early 2ks again
  • Vote = Other: I use GrapheneOS on Pixel 9a? It may come with a tin-foil hat, but now there’s more reason to switch. Maybe that can be another option in the straw poll “Will you switch to GrapheneOS?”
  • Other: I’m looking at the Motorola announcement and hoping that there is something there…
